Micromega Dynamics is a Spin-off company
of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics of the Free University of Brussels
(ULB) which has a worldwide reputation in active vibration control.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics of the ULB was established
in October 1987. From the beginning, the department specialized in the modeling and control of electromechanical systems and in the active control of
vibrations. The active damping of a truss structure using piezoelectric
actuators was demonstrated as early as 1989. This project raised the interest of
the European Space Agency and led to several collaborations with European
aerospace companies and research labs. An on-orbit active damping experiment was
flown in 1995.
In the late 90's, the department had developed a research experience in the
design and simulation of active structures using embedded SMART actuators
and sensors and some of the developed technologies were mature enough to
be used in the industry. Projects were started together with companies from defense, civil engineering, aeronautics and automotive industries.
Some of those companies showing interest in active vibration
control technologies wanted to further develop their cooperation with the
Dept. of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics.
However, they expressed the wish to work with a commercial company in order to
be able to establish a better contractual framework for larger and longer
projects. That is the reason why Micromega Dynamics was incorporated in may 1999
and started some projects immediately.
In order to take the best of the two worlds, the basic team of Micromega
Dynamics is made of both people from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics and people from the industry. Multi-disciplinary skills
are searched for and high-level engineers with
knowledge in at least two disciplines covered by Mechatronics (i.e.
instrumentation, mechanics, software, control, electronics)
join Micromega
Dynamics.
We - at Micromega Dynamics - are
able to face any customer
request regarding vibration control or nanopositioning and to provide them with
consistent solutions.
