Piezoelectric Actuators and Motors

Micromega Dynamics is the representative for the Benelux of Cedrat Technologies who proposes innovative piezoelectric actuators and motors.

Cedrat linear piezoelectric devices cover a wide range of free displacements from 10 µm to several centimeters, while keeping the overall device dimensions to a minimum. Those devices are perfect for nanopositioning applications

Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators

The Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators (APAs) have been designed in order to offer the largest possible stroke while keeping a reasonable size and a long lifetime.

Unlike conventional piezoelectric actuators whose stroke is only about 0.1% of their length, Cedrat APAs relies on a piezoelectric stack and on a deformable shell in order to amplify the allowed displacement. Amplification ratios of 10 can be achieved depending on the shape of the shell.

The bending behavior of the shell under piezoelectric actuation results in a continuous stress distribution leading to high lifetimes (up to 1010 cycles). Furthermore the symmetric shape of the structure makes the actuator insensitive to twist and bend torques.

The smallest actuator is the APA25XS. It exhibits a 28 µm stroke for a dimension of 6 mm only. The biggest one - the APA500L - has a  0.5 mm stroke. Non-magnetic versions of the APAs are available upon request.

Piezoelectric Motors

Piezoelectric motors use the friction between a mobile part and a vibrating part in order to create either a linear or a rotational motion.

The main advantages of Cedrat piezomotors as compared to electromagnetic devices are:

  • Their high force at rest with no power being applied;
  • Their low speed and high force without any gearing mechanism;
  • Their high force-to-mass ratio.

As compared to other piezomotors,

  • They require low voltage only (10V typically),
  • They are modular providing mainly a tangential velocity and a friction force,
  • They can be integrated into both linear and rotating devices.
