Optical Delay line for Darwin (ODL)

Micromega Dynamics is involved in the design and development of a breadboard cryogenic optical delay line for DARWIN in collaboration with Alcatel Space (FR); CSL (B); Dutch Space (NL); Sageis-CSO (FR); SRON (NL) and TNO Science & Industry (NL) in favour of ESA.

Darwin will use a flotilla of six space telescopes, each of which will be at least 1.5 meters in diameter. They will work together to scan the nearby Universe, looking for signs of life on Earth-like planets.

Micromega Dynamics is responsible for the guiding mechanism based on the magnetic bearing technology (including actuators, sensors, bearing control systems and the related electronics)  for the Optical Delay Line control scheme allowing the nanopositioning control of each mirrors involved in the nulling interferometry process (by controlling very precisely the distance of all telescopes).

Characteristics

  • High-precision mechanism based on the magnetic bearing technology

  • 1 Degree-of-Freedom (Translation)

  • Resolution: 1nmRMS

  • Stroke: 10mm

  • Guiding accuracy: 50 mrad

  • Power dissipation in the mechanism: <25mW

  • Applications: Optical Delay Lines
