Chatter control in machine tools

Chatter is a self-excitation phenomenon occuring in machine tools, in which the cutting process tends to decrease the machine structural damping ending with an unstable behavior.

Solution based on ADDs have been implemented on a big milling machine (Soraluce SV6000). They will be used to assess its performances in reducing the chatter phenomenon appearance (see video - MPEG, 3 Mo).

One can clearly see that the ADDs prevent the apparition of the chatter by increasing the initial structural damping of the machine.
